Multifamily Housing Recycling Initiative
July 17, 2007
In the Greater Phoenix area, single-family residential recycling is well established, but across the many communities where we work, municipalities have had difficulty initiating recycling programs for multifamily housing developments. Responding to this need, Hudson Baylor started up a hybrid multifamily recycling program for two multi-unit apartment complexes in June 2007. HBC, working with the management at the Empirium complexes at Central Avenue and Steel Park in Phoenix, has designed a unique, modified single stream collection program that is easy for the residents to use and efficient for building management. HBC has sited collection containers at multiple locations adjacent to the building’s existing solid waste collection containers, and provided building management with the necessary education materials so that residents understand what should be included in the recycling bins. HBC then provides specialized collection services to help management keep the bins empty and the site clean. HBC expects that the success of this pilot program will be replicated at additional facilities throughout the Phoenix area during 2008.
