Providing New Options to a Paper Supplier
Hudson Baylor's fiber division collects various grades of paper from area businesses.
In one case, Hudson Baylor met with a real estate owner who generated a moderate amount of white ledger paper, and whose firm had been throwing the paper away rather than recycling it. We presented this business owner with a new option. Instead of paying to have paper thrown away, the firm agreed to let us manage the paper recycling for them. We supplied containers for paper to be collected ("toters"), and picked these up each week at no charge. The client experienced an immediate reduction in cost.
There were more benefits to come. After processing the paper, we sold it to a paper mill for reuse and, as long as the market price for the paper remained above a minimum threshold, the client firm received a portion of the proceeds from the sale of the paper to the mill.
As a result, the client was able not only to reduce its costs, but also to fund its year-end holiday party entirely from the proceeds of this recycling program.
Cost-Saving Solutions for a Lighting Supplier
One of our clients was generating a moderate amount of cardboard. The cardboard was loosely stacked on pallets and taking up space for the client. At only a few pallets per week, it was not economical for them to recycle it even though their method of disposing of this cardboard was creating a mess and costing them money.
We recognized that at this volume, it would be difficult for us to efficiently recycle this cardboard. So we found a different solution--we helped them install their own baler. Rather than stacking the cardboard on pallets, (which would take up space and require frequent cleanups,) we enabled our client to bale their own cardboard. As baled cardboard is more compact, this allowed them to recapture some of their warehouse space. The client also reduced manpower costs related to managing the cardboard, as the messy pallet system was eliminated.
In addition, the client's waste disposal cost was reduced, thanks to the reduction in waste volume. We picked up the cardboard bales at no cost. And when market conditions are strong enough, we also share some of the market pricing with the client, turning what had been an expensive, cumbersome, and inefficient disposal problem into a revenue-generating solution.
