MRF Operations

To convert a truckload of municipally collected recyclables into a saleable commodity, the materials must be sorted. This takes place at a recycling facility, known as a "Materials Recovery Facility" or MRF (pronounced "murph").

For a recycler, it is critical to sort these materials effectively and efficiently. The value of recycled materials is highest when the material is at its "most pure" or free from other product types or contaminants. Thus, a MRF usually contains a highly automated series of conveyors and sorting stations to separate glass (ideally sorted by color), aluminum, steel, different types of plastics, and different forms of paper and cardboard into single product types.

Our MRF Expertise
Hudson Baylor operates two of the largest MRFs in the Southwest. The Hudson Baylor West ("HBW") facility was built in the early 1990s and processes most of the City of Phoenix's residential recyclables--no small accomplishment, as Phoenix is the sixth-largest city in the US and one of the fastest growing.

In early 2002, Hudson Baylor completed construction and began operations at a state-of-the-art facility located at the Salt River Pima-Maricopoa Indian Community Landfill in Scottsdale, Arizona. This brand-new facility currently provides efficient service to the cities of Mesa and Scottsdale, and management is pursuing opportunities to serve other surrounding communities.
