"DNA barcoding" a DNA-based technique for identifying species, will be the subject of a week-long international conference of 350 experts from more than 45 countries. These experts will converge on the Academia Sinica campus in Taiwan to assess the value of DNA barcoding for their research and for a wide range of applications that affect the everyday life of non-scientists. Consumer protection, food safety, environmental quality, and public health are among the many areas that could benefit from this new technique. The Conference has been organized by the Consortium for the Barcode of Life (CBOL), an initiative with 150 Member Organizations in 50 countries that is hosted by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC.
